Myths & Misconceptions of Deer Feed
Looking at the shelves of your favorite outdoor store, there are without doubt a variety of deer feeds and attractants to choose from, but what is the best choice? To sum it up in four words... Stop the junk food!
Whitetail, Mule Deer and Elk are ruminants like cattle and sheep, and therefore can make use of fibrous feeds because of the microbes that aid digestion in their rumen. However, it is important to remember any nutrient in excess can cause more harm than good. Often, we are led to believe that "more is better". That is, if a little protein is good – lets use more. If a little fat is good – lets use more. The truth is that subtle and gradual changes to a ruminants diet will yield the greatest results.
Myth #1- High protein is good
While protein is an essential nutrient for growth, lactation and antler development, too much protein can cause damage to the animals waste elimination system causing stress and wearing down their natural immune system. As a deer eats, most of the protein in its diet is converted to ammonia by the rumen microbes. The microbes then absorb what they need and the rest is transferred through the rumen wall into the blood stream were it becomes a toxin and must be filtered out by the kidneys and liver.
The optimum protein level of Deer and Elk feed is about 15%.
Myth #2 - High fat is good
Low levels of fat can be a good energy source for ruminants. However, overfeeding fat can interfere with rumen microbes inhibiting its ability to break down fibrous feeds, the mainstay of Deer and Elk diets.
